Culture in Warsaw
Warsaw can be proud of its rich cultural offer. Every day many events takes place in the capital city of Poland: film shows, exhibitions, open discussions, theatre plays and music shows. Warsaw is a home to many non-governmental organizations, municipal and state cultural institutions, clubs, cafes and museums.
Try to aid organizations engaged in the promotion of different cultures and thus enrich the cultural offer of Warsaw. You can also work for different organizations, which often advertise that they are seeking for employees or volunteers. Such information can be found on: www.ngo.pl.
Non-governmental organizations are organizing a number of artistic and cultural activities open to all residents of Warsaw. For example, you can take part in theater or journalism workshops (“Strefa Wolnosłowa”), projects related with art in public spaces and design (Association of Creative Initiatives “ę”) and various integration meetings (Foundation for Development "Beyond Borders" - reading and cooking workshops, the Foundation for Somalia - workshops during the series of Warsaw Family Melting Pot meetings).
In October, free tours are organized by the Association of Creative Initiatives “ę” under the “Warsaw for Beginners”. To take part in a trip please fill in the form available on organization’s website.
Organizations founded by migrants
In the capital, feel free to join many organizations founded by foreigners working for social and cultural purposes. You may start your own organization as well. How to do and what responsibilities this involves you can read in guides placed on ngo.pl site. Some of the organizations are placed on the map.
One of Warsaw's organization is the Foundation “Africa Another Way" implementing cultural and artistic projects for the promotion of African culture. For the foundation works also the Committee for African Community in Poland (www.fundacja.afryka.org Tel: 883 348 287).
Organizations working with foreigners, founded by foreigner or their supporters may apply for additional funding for their projects. To learn more, participate in the Committee on Social Dialogue at the Office of the City of Warsaw.

Theatre and cinema
In Warsaw there are many theaters presenting the latest productions, however, it is better to choose smaller cinemas where tickets are cheaper and repertoire is more ambitious (e.g. Kino Lab, Kino Luna, Kino Świt).
Many festivals take place in Warsaw during the autumn and winter. Pay a visit to Watch Docs Festival in December (www.watchdocs.pl) during which are held screenings of documentaries from around the world, concerts, workshops, exhibitions and debates - all festival events are free of charge.
Theatre tickets are much more expensive, but mind that each theater sells special tickets called "wejściówki" - the cheapest tickets, which do not provide us with a numbered seat, but still we can sit on the free place pointed by the service just before the performance starts, or in specially dedicated sector. In the Grand Theatre - National Opera (1 Teatralny Sq, accessible from City Centre: every tram stop to Bank Square, then walk down the Senatorska St) the cheapest seats are on the highest, third balcony and their cost is about 25 PLN, depending on performance. Warsaw museums offer free entrances once a week, but also every year on May takes place a Night of Museums - museums, galleries, culture and art institutions are open to the public for the entire night.
How much does culture cost?
Average price of a cinema ticket is 15-18 PLN
Theatre tickets - 30-90 PLN
Tickets to the museum - 5-15 PLN
If you are considering enrolling yourself or your child for additional art, dance or sports classes, see the offer of community centres. All districts have their own facilities, and prices for various classes are significantly lower than those in private schools.
